The nation's elder statesman Fidel V. Ramos, former Philippine president shares his thoughts on recent events
Ramos may have endorsed President Rodrigo Duterte during the 2016 elections, but he has since become critical of some of the administration's moves. The hero's burial of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, whose fall from power was largely due to Ramos' reversal in 1986, was an "insult" to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Ramos has also voiced his concern on the war the PNP is waging against illegal drugs and stressed the need for an interdependent foreign policy.

2016: The year the Marcoses had it so good
by Patty Pasion December 14, 2016
Sure, the nation had not collectively forgotten Martial Law, but that dark chapter in our history was probably not foremost on anyone's mind at the start of 2016. That was, until the only son and namesake of dictator Ferdinand Marcos started climbing up in election surveys and, later, the family won its decades-long campaign to bury the former president as a hero.
This is where 30 years have brought the country. In 1986, Marcos was ousted from power as thousands gathered peacefully on EDSA

Marcos in mausoleum: Wax or real?
Chiara Zambrano, Jul 05, 2011
Mortician: It's time for Marcos to be buried

With the Supreme Court (SC) approving the burial of former Pres. Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Cemetery of Heroes), netizens are not just debating whether he deserves to be buried there considering the many atrocities committed during the Martial Law, there is also a debate on whether the body at his mausoleum was actually his or just a wax figure.
While the body at the mausoleum is touted to be one of the world’s best preserved corpses and is displayed in a full glass coffin much like Sleeping Beauty, many scoff at that claim and say that the former dictator’s body had actually long been buried in a secret location and that the one on display is merely a wax figure.

November 16, 2016
Some people can consider the mock funeral of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Inayawan dump site by militant groups as being in bad taste. Even if only a Marcos effigy was buried, the act may not look good for some. It contradicts the Filipino tradition of not speaking ill of the dead.
But then Marcos is not an ordinary dead. He presided over a dictatorship that brought the worst in the country's governance.
There are now plans to block the transport of Marcos's remains from Batac, Ilocos Norte to the Libingan ng mga Bayani. We just hope the protest actions won't reach that stage, though, before the issue is resolved.

Dismiss anti-Marcos protests at your peril
Published November 28, 2016
The burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani has cost President Duterte political capital, though it appears he doesn't see it that way.
To dismiss the protests as fleeting or manufactured or the antics of the has-beens is to misread the situation.
Emotions made Duterte president. He, of all people, should know that emotions are driving these protests.

The anger is real. It is raw. It is deep.

Choosy protesters
by Vergel O. Santos November 28, 2016
For all that dreadful familiarity, Duterte, with his own tendency toward authoritarianism, is even less criticized than a dead dictator.
Protesters have returned to the streets, but they seem choosy with their issues and targets, and careful not to touch President Duterte.
These days they have seized upon the hero's burial given the dictator Ferdinand Marcos. Duterte himself championed it and now, after the burial, continues to defend it, but it's the Marcoses who are getting it from the protesters, almost exclusively, for brazenness and insensitivity.

Nov. 30
November 26, 2016 by Isolde D. Amante
As I have tried to listen to other opinions, I cannot agree with the effort to “normalize” Marcos’s burial in the Libingan ng mga Bayani. I don’t accept this willful amnesia and apathy. Marcos was a dictator and a plunderer, during whose regime thousands disappeared, suffered torture or were slaughtered. We continue to pay for the debts his regime amassed. If we can accept that he deserves to be buried among heroes, who knows what else we will look away from?
A peaceful protest
Several activities are lined up today in Cebu and Metro Manila for those who wish to express their dismay with the burial nearly two weeks ago of the dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
We have no idea how large or how small a crowd these activities will gather.
Those numbers won’t be the point. The point is that some people remain willing to glean the lessons of Martial Law, in order that we may avoid repeating it. Never mind the accusations, mostly from Marcos apologists, that those objecting to his furtive burial among heroes need to learn forgiveness and to free themselves of hate. To that, we say: one cannot forgive those who have not even tried to make amends. One can keep a painful memory alive in the name of truth, not hate.
