Today I looked out into a classroom of faces either brimming with tears or trying not to cry. I’ve seen my fellow teachers cry. On the street, I have heard strangers make jokes about "deporting illegals". I have known grown men and women who are afraid of leaving their homes. I have walked into schools and colleges, places of learning, and been met with the silence that comes with the realization that our world is not what we thought it was.
This is the truly devastating thing about today’s America.

Pinoy au pairs

We take a closer look at the lives of au pairs. Au Pairs normally stay with a host family in a foreign country to learn about language and culture, while helping with daily chores. But for some Filipinos, au pair programs become opportunities to become undocumented domestic workers. While living with their host families for 18 months, they serve as nannies, cooks and all-around helpers.  Look the full description both in English and Tagalog of the video HERE
Filipina au pair in Denmark - Documentary

This documentary is mainly in Tagalog with Danish subtitles.

The term AU PAIR refers to a cultural exchange, where young people can experience a foreign country in return for light housework and nursing - and a small allowance. In reality, au pairs are very cheap domestic help for busy families all over the world. Au Pair follows three Philippine girls as they leave their families behind and try to make a better future for themselves abroad.
No More Balikbayans - The truth is, life abroad is hard

They all leave the country burning with desire for a better of life. Yet many return home as cold and lifeless corpses. Wala Nang Balikbayan is about the many vulnerabilities that Overseas Filipino Workers face abroad, at times leading to their death either under mysterious circumstances or through capital punishment. In this documentary, OFWs are victims of abuse and the Philippine governments criminal neglect. They are, however, also beginning to fight for their rights and to question the ultimate folly of the government's labor export program.

Migrant domestic workers in UAE treated like 'animals'
by/Buena Bernal Oct 23, 2014

'The UAE should reform its kafala system so domestic workers can change employers without their consent and without losing valid immigration status,' says Human Rights Watch.
Sexual violence, isolation and forced confinement, unpaid wages, long working hours with limited food, and regular beating are just some of the conditions migrant domestic workers in oil-rich United Arab Emirates (UAE) endure in the hands of their employers.

Quezon City resident Marelie Brua returned home to the Philippines after suffering maltreatment and a meager 800-dirham ($217 or P9,712) monthly pay under the employ of an Arab family.

A mere animal "bought" at a price is how domestic workers to the UAE are regarded, Brua shared in an HRW clip.

This "seemingly entrenched pattern" of abuses was detailed in a 79-page report by New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) released Thursday, October 23 2014, - "I Already Bought You" - urging the UAE government to enact reforms to put an end to it. (look below link)

'Ang yabang mo na!' and other things balikbayans are told
by/Shakira Sison Nov 20, 2014

Why do we call balikbayans "mayabang"? Even before they say a word, the difference in their attire, mannerisms, or speech suddenly brands balikbayans as boastful. You came home one day after a few years of living abroad. After the welcome hugs came the comments of who you've become now that you're back from another land.
Overseas Pinoys help when they can, but being abroad where there may be better opportunities does not mean there are no financial struggles. Wearing different clothes or having a different outlook does not make OFWs mayabang (braggart) or hindi na maabot (unreachable). Not raining money on everyone does not make them madamot (selfish).
