Marikina’s shoe industry - Shoe of the nation address

by/George P. Moya Published Oct 04, 2014

There are now only over 100 listed companies in Marikina’s shoe industry. It had dramatically decreased by tenfold from its glory days in the 1970s, where there were over 1,000 listed companies in Marikina’s shoe industry.
Floods of change came wave after wave in Marikina and its shoe industry nearly drowned.
“This industry is dying. We really have to help them get back in business,” says Marikina Mayor Del de Guzman

Sari-sari store

A sari-sari store is a convenience store found in the Philippines. The word sari-sari is Tagalog meaning "variety". Such stores form an important economic and social location in a Filipino community. It is present in almost all neighborhoods, sometimes even in every street. Most sari-sari stores are privately owned shops and are operated inside the shopkeeper's house.

Empowering Sari-Sari Stores In The Philippines

The Sari-Sari Stores are vital assets in the local economy. We perceive these small business people as "heroes" of the Micro-economy at the grassroots of our society

Magna Kultura Foundation has been organizing outreach seminar programs designed to educate retail store owners and store-keepers with basic business skills. Most of the vendors are “un-schooled” in business enterprise management. But we greatly admire the boldness of these individuals, as they have taken the initiative to put up small business operations.

Local Etiquette - Manila

How to behave in social situations in Manila. Here are a few customs and etiquette to be aware of during your visit to the Phillipines. Filipinos value honor. The concept of hiya or shame requires one to behave in a manner that will not shame the person or the family. Handshake is common when meeting someone. If elders are present, acknowledge them first. Address people formally indicating their profession or using their last names. In discussions Filipinos tend to be non-confrontational. People will not directly say no.

The Story of Philippine Money
Video

The Culion Leper Colony Coinage (Palawan Philippine Coins).

From 1/2 centavo to 1 peso, year 1913 to 1930. Between 1902 and 1904, the Commission of Public Health supervised the establishment of a leper colony on Culion Island in the China Sea, some 150 miles South-East of Manila. A decision to provide the colony with its own coins, valid only for use on the island, was delayed until 1913 when the first series, made by a private firm, Frank & Co., in Manila was introduced. Later issues were struck at the Manila Mint after it went into operation in 1920. In all, there were six dated issues and a total of 16 varieties made for the Culion leper colony. Two have special features which call for note. The probability is that the half centavo, issued only in 1913, was not put into circulation. By unofficial report 2,000 of the 1930 one-centavo pieces were minted. However, none are known to exist in any collection and it seems unlikely that any were actually issued. (Look ref. HERE)

You loose your cool and get angry at the waitress. She can go to the Bureau of Immigration and file a complaint against you, and most likely, you will be deported!
