"Never forget the roots of your family"

A little serious of our mind:

Try to imagine, that your grandchildren can´t speak with you in your language......

Learn your family the language of the roots, so your family - children can speak their language from childhood!

Learn your family the culture of the roots, so your family understand and respect the roots e.g. Mano Po!

Community-based work frees town from floods.

In the last two decades, storms and monsoon rains have brought floods, sickness, and a standstill in business activities to Balangiga, a small seaside town in Eastern Samar, Philippines. Using a community-driven development (CDD) approach, residents addressed this problem by constructing a network of canals to channel floodwaters toward the sea. It has not only empowered local communities to address flooding and improve their health, but also created jobs for local residents, thus lessening poverty.

The environment-poverty connection ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE

ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE AND VULNERABILITY IN THE PHILIPPINES

by Juan M. Pulhin

The environment-poverty connection has been the subject of recent discourse in environmental management. This paper is written to fill this gap. It aims to explore deeper the environment-poverty interlink by offering some explanations to the following questions:

  1. What are the recently documented environmental changes in the Philippines and how are these impacting on the vulnerability of the poor?
  2. How do environmental changes affect the population movements especially among the poor?
  3. What are the strategies employed by the different sectors, especially the government, to reduce impacts of adverse environmental changes?
  4. Which strategies seem to be more effective in reducing the vulnerability of the poor and how can they be improved?
