Endangered Species in Flora (and a little Fauna)

Wild habitats are fast disappearing. Forests are being cut down, rivers and seas polluted, heathlands built on, hedgerows pulled up, ponds filled in - the destruction seems endless. As the habitats decrease, so do their communities of animals and plants. Habitat destruction is one of the main reasons why many species face extinction. Habitats are commonly split up and animals can't get from one part to another, unless wildlife 'corridors' are provided. Other reasons for their demise include the hunting of animals and collection of plants. Now they are facing a new threat, that of climate change.

”According to an old legend, coconut is God’s gift to the lazy man. “He sleeps in the shade of the tree, is awakened when a nut falls, drinks the milk, and eat some of the meat. He then feeds the rest of the meat to the chickens and cattle, which produce eggs and milk and meat, respectively. The leaves provide thatch for the roof and walls of his coconut hut, and are also woven into hats, baskets and mats.”

Cashew or kasoy is versitile and one of the leading nut crops in the Philippines. It is grown in almost all regions in the country while the largest production center is found in Palawan. The cashew fruit has many uses, the apple can be eaten or juiced. It can be made into prunes, glazed fruit, chutney, wine and vinegar. The nut kernels are usually roasted, salted or glazed. The cahew apple and kernel testa are used as feed to livestock or poultry. Its leaves and barl can cure toothache, sore throat and gums, burns, diarrhea, dysentery and hemorrhoids. Further, the cashew nut shell liquid is an ingredient in making varnishes, paints, plastics, brake linings, wood preservatives, insecticides and indelible ink.

Forest regeneration in the Philippines

FAO's 2011 State of the World's Forests report, published to coincide with the International Year of Forests, highlights some positive and encouraging trends. Asia and the Near East are showing an increase in forest regeneration and replanting projects. One such project is the "Advancing the Application of Assisted Natural Regeneration for Effective Low-cost Forest Restoration" project, carried out on the Philippine Island of Bohol.
Presented in this video, it highlights the vital role of local communities in managing, conserving and developing forests. In particular, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) partnered with the Philippines government to promote ANR (Assisted Natural Regeneration) as a way of regenerating the forests

The Pinugo or Muyong forest management system of Ifugao

The pinugo or muyung is an indigenous system of forest management unique to the people of Ifugao, one of the seven major ethno-linguistic groups inhabiting the Philippine Cordillera. Adapted since time immemorial, the pinugo/muyung covers clan-owned woodlots or forests located above the rice terraces. For the Ifugao household, the pinugo/muyong is a source of food, fuel, lumber for housing and woodcarving, medicinal plants, botanical pesticides, irrigation, domestic water, and cash. In addition, it serves as the best preventive measure against soil erosion. A set of customary laws and values govern the system based on the indigenous principle that intrinsically attached the Ifugao people to the land and environment. Produced by Kadioan Inc. with the support of Growing Forest Partnership, IEED, and International Alliance of Indigenous and Tribal Peoples of the Tropical Forests.
