	Binondo, Manila Binondo is an enclave in Manila primarily populated by ethnic Chinese living in the Philippines. It is the oldest Chinatown in the world, established in 1594. Historically, this was where the Spanish permitted converted sangleys, their indigenous Filipino wives, and their mixed-race descendants, the mestizos de sangley or Chinese mestizos, to reside. Similarly, Parían, an area near Intramuros, was where the Spanish first restricted unconverted Chinese immigrants. They allowed sangley settlement at Parían because it was within the range of Intramuros' cannons, and they felt they could control any uprising from the labourers. Video	Culion Island, a former leper colony in Philippines & The Culion Leper Colony Coinage (Palawan Philippine Coins). From 1/2 centavo to 1 peso, year 1913 to 1930. Between 1902 and 1904, the Commission of Public Health supervised the establishment of a leper colony on Culion Island in the China Sea, some 150 miles South-East of Manila. A decision to provide the colony with its own coins, valid only for use on the island, was delayed until 1913 when the first series, made by a private firm, Frank & Co., in Manila was introduced. Later issues were struck at the Manila Mint after it went into operation in 1920. In all, there were six dated issues and a total of 16 varieties made for the Culion leper colony. Two have special features which call for note. The probability is that the half centavo, issued only in 1913, was not put into circulation. By unofficial report 2,000 of the 1930 one-centavo pieces were minted. However, none are known to exist in any collection and it seems unlikely that any were actually issued. (Look ref.
